GameTrailers Shuts Down after 13 years

GameTrailers, a name anyone who’s ever followed video game coverage on the internet knows all too well, will cease to exist. The site is closing down after 13 years,it has been announced.

When it opened in 2002, GameTrailers made its name as a very early purveyor of premium web video, including trailers, video previews and reviews.

The decline of GameTrailers could be partly attributed to the ascension of YouTube, which became the go-to site for all kinds of video, including video game clips. The site remained big, but perhaps things started to take a turn for the worse as the first decade approached, and in 2014 MTV sold off the site to Defy Media.

No reason was given for the closure. With the rise of YouTubers posting everything from walkthroughs to sketches to reviews on new gear and software, audience numbers on GameTrailers were likely to dwindle.

The shutdown of GameTrailers, however, does not come without drama involved, as a post on the NeoGAF forums by Associate Editor Ben Moore revealed that the company’s employees only learned of the closure of GameTrailers on the day that it was closing up shop. The GT staff were going about their usual business of posting game trailers, reviews, and original programming until the end. YouTube wouldn’t be founded for another three years; consumer live streaming was nine years away. Online video game journalism was still relegated to text articles, and the only way to watch programs about video games was on TV.

GameTrailers helped change all that. “That is the legacy of GameTrailers”, the company’s post said.

GameTrailers announced that they will be conducting one final Twitch.tv stream tonight at 6:00 PM PST, which can be viewed here. We’re grateful to all of our fans who helped make us successful.
