Browser extensions that Make your web browser more powerful for free
The technology world is full of confusing terms and concepts, but if you’re drowning in the jargon, we’re here to explain what these tech terms mean and how they can benefit you.
In this article, we’re looking at web browser extensions.
What are browser extensions?
Your web browser is your window to the internet – it’s the program you use to check your emails, keep up with social media and browse web pages on your PC. Browsers are already packed with features to help make your online experience easy, but with browser extensions, you could do so much more.
What do they do?
Almost anything. Extensions are like apps for your browser, and like apps, they’re mostly made by third parties – different companies to the ones that make your web browser in the first place – and hence they serve every conceivable need.
Do you want your browser to automatically enlarge thumbnail images so you can see them clearly? There’s a browser extension for that.
Other extensions let you highlight text on a page and have your browser read it aloud, add a weather forecast built into your browser (so you don’t have to go looking for one) and store your passwords so you don’t have to try and remember them for every site you visit.
With these tools at your fingertips, the world wide web really is your oyster.
How do you get extensions?
Do they cost anything?
Not usually. The vast majority of extensions are free to download, though some do offer subscriptions.
Some extensions are ‘freemium’ downloads, which means the basic extension is free but you have to pay for more advanced features. But as long as you’re happy going without all the bells and whistles, you can enhance your browser no end without paying a penny!
